PS Plus Explained: Essential, Extra and Deluxe

The three tiers in plain words

The exact games and features differ by region and change over time, so check Sony's official PlayStation Plus pages for the current list before you decide.

• •Essential is the base tier. It unlocks online multiplayer in games that need it, adds monthly games you can claim while subscribed, and includes cloud storage for saves and member discounts in the PlayStation Store.
• •Extra includes everything in Essential, plus the Game Catalog: a library of PS5 and PS4 games you can download and play while your subscription is active. Games join and leave the catalogue over time.
• •Deluxe includes everything in Extra, plus the Classics Catalog of older PlayStation games and time-limited trials of selected new games. In some regions Sony calls this tier Premium.

Do you need PS Plus at all?

Not everyone does. Single-player games you own work without a subscription, and free-to-play games do not need PS Plus for their online modes. You need at least Essential if you want to play paid games online with other people, for example online matches in football games. If you only play offline story games, a subscription is optional, and you can decide later.

Which tier should you choose?

If you mainly play online, for example football or shooters with friends, Essential is often enough. If you like trying many different games and do not mind that they rotate, Extra gives you a large library for one subscription price. Deluxe makes most sense if you enjoy older PlayStation classics or want to try some new releases before buying them.

Longer durations usually work out cheaper per month than renewing every month, so compare the 1, 3 and 12 month options on the PS Plus page before you decide.

PS5 or PS4 version
